Amy was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. After graduating from New Hanover High School, she attended UNCW and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Science. She taught for two years at Park Avenue School and for the next 30 years she worked for New Hanover County Schools where she taught 5th grade at John J. Blair Elementary School. In her time at Blair, she received the Teacher of the Year Award for the 2000-2001 school year and again in 2017-2018. Amy also considers church involvement important and for 5 years assisted her husband to lead the youth at Trinity United Methodist Church. There she also helped out with nursery, Sunday School, Children's Church, and Vacation Bible School.
